Terrance & Derek
Meet Terrance and Derek—4th generation farmers, best friends, and the dedicated team behind Prairie Yak Farms. Growing up immersed in the farming lifestyle, they share a deep-rooted passion for sustainable agriculture and quality food production. When they first discovered the quality and efficiency of yak as a meat source, they knew it was the perfect fit for their lives and values. Yaks offer lean, nutrient-rich meat, and their efficient grazing habits align with the brothers’ commitment to responsible, environmentally friendly farming.
Terrance and Derek are proud to bring this unique product from their farm to your table, upholding the principles their family has valued for generations.
Terrance
Terrance, the oldest of four siblings, brings a strong family foundation and a deep love for ranch life to Prairie Yak Farms. Married to his wife Brett, who he considers the “secret ingredient” behind both his and the farm’s success, he’s raising three children—Braxton, Jaylyn, and Quinn—with the same hands-on values he grew up with. Terrance is passionate about animal health and spends time understanding how animals move and think, applying this knowledge to his daily care for the yaks.
Family is his biggest motivator, especially as he watches his kids take on responsibilities around the farm—whether it’s Braxton tending to his goats or Jaylyn brushing her pony. Like Terrance did with chores on the family’s hog operation, they’re learning the value of a strong handshake and finding purpose in each task.
In addition to his work on the ranch, Terrance also runs his own contracting company, keeping him more than busy. His drive, dedication to quality, and commitment to family and animal health make him a vital force behind Prairie Yak Farms.
Derek
Derek, the second of four brothers, grew up always trying to keep pace with Terrance or beat him at any challenge, shaping him into a well-rounded, skilled individual with a talent for sports, methodical thinking, and tackling any task at hand. A trained heavy-duty technician, Derek now works full-time on the family grain farm alongside his dad and uncle, where his passion for grain production and forward-thinking approach to farming set him apart.
Derek’s adventurous side fuels his love for quadding trips and outdoor exploration. His loyal companion, Zeus, a dog he rescued at age two, is always by his side, and their bond is remarkable to witness. Derek brings a valuable, innovative touch to Prairie Yak Farms operations, making him an invaluable part of the team.
Brett
Brett is the backbone of both the family and Prairie Yak Farms. As Terrance’s wife and the proud mother of their three children, she balances a full plate with remarkable dedication. While working full-time for Alberta Health Services and pursuing her master’s degree in psychology, Brett also keeps the farm running smoothly by handling all the bookkeeping.
Beyond her professional and academic accomplishments, Brett has always had a competitive spirit. As a former competitive softball pitcher, she brings her athletic drive into everything she does. Now, she enjoys passing that same determination and love for sports down to her children, fostering a sense of hard work and fun in the next generation.
